Trump's Travel Ban
It is no surprise that some peoples from certain countries have been banned from coming to the United States. The news of Trump's travel ban spread like wild fire, though he is not the first president to do such a thing. However, he is the first president to take such pride in it. So let us clear up some confusion about this. This was one of the biggest news headlines in Trump's first year of presidency (still, not shocking...well at least in my opinion). The Trump administration had put a 90-day travel ban on people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Somalia, and Yemen.
This ban faced much opposition from the federal courts and he then changed his mind and excluded Iraq. But, as pointed out by writer Alice Foster, "Federal judges blocked the new ban in March [2017]. But the Supreme Court has now revived parts of the ban, allowing it to go into effect for travellers with no strong ties to the US." (Express Co., Foster). To no surprise again, Trump then took to Twitter, tweeting that this was a national security win. But, why those countries? And why were some countries left out?
Well, here's why; he reasoned that President Obama's administration had listed these countries as threats to the United States. He also pointed out that though these countries are largely Muslim, this is not a ban on Muslims, but on terrorists. Sounded to me that Trump was using dog whistles. However, the Obama administration, "...placed limited restrictions on certain travellers who had visited Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen" (Foster). The common theme with these countries is that ISIS has a strong foothold in each and a lot of these countries are in bloody, violent civil wars. Iran on the other hand, is seen to have always been hostile towards the U.S. and banned U.S. travelers in response to Trump's ban.
