Map of American Ethnic Groups
On September 1, 2013, a writer named Jessica Jerreat for the Daily Mail.com of the UK wrote an article about a map that illustrates how many ethnic groups there are in the United States and the population of each. She goes in detail about groups, largest to smallest. One thing I must note is that she uses the term "the melting pot" which is what we have talked about already in our last class. The melting pot is the myth that eventually all ethnic groups will assimilate into one culture, American. This is a fairly outdated article as we are now in 2018, but it takes a long time to gather information on population and separate them into their ethnic groups. The even bigger difficulty is that there is so much ethnic mixing that it is harder and harder to group people into one ethnic group. For example, I am Salvadorian- and Mexican-American. Though I can be categorized into being Hispanic/Latino, there is a wide variety of Hispanics/Latinos. Anyways, back to the article, the largest ethnic group in the United States as of September 1, 2013 are German Americans; "By far the largest ancestral group, stretching from coast to coast across 21st century America is German, with 49,206,934 people. The peak immigration for Germans was in the mid-19th century as thousands were driven from their homes by unemployment and unrest" (Jerreat). The second largest ethnic group in America are African Americans/Black at the population of 41,284,752 (Jerreat). Third, Irish with a population of 35,523,082. Coming in fourth place, Mexican population of 31,789,483. Fifth, English with the population of 26,923,091. Sixth are Americans who as the writer points out are people who claim American ancestry for political reasons (not even Native Americans...a little confusing), but in any event, with the population of 19,911,467. Seventh, Italians with the population of 17,558,598. Eighth place, Polish with the population of 9,739,653. Last place, the French with the population of 9,136,092.
